The Boston Fleet on Wednesday announced a number of additions to their coaching staff for the 2025-26 season.
Jordan LaVallée-Smotherman, Derek Whitmore and Kacey Bellamy will join assistant coach Stefanie McKeough, goaltending coach Lenny Mosca and video coach Shawn Roche to round out new head coach Kris Sparre’s coaching staff for the upcoming PWHL season.
“Bringing Jordan onto our staff is a big win for us,” Sparre said in a release from the team. “His experience as a head coach, not just in North America but also overseas, gives him a unique perspective. He’s passionate about the game and has a track record for developing players.”
The former Worcester Railers general manager and head coach led the ECHL club to a 66-66-9-3 record across two seasons. He will serve as an assistant coach for Boston.
“I am thrilled to join the Boston Fleet,” LaVallée-Smotherman said, per the release. “Heading into the rink every day with such amazing staff and having the chance to work with some of the best athletes in the world is an opportunity I am beyond grateful for. I’m excited to bring my passion, energy and hockey knowledge to this team and help us achieve great things this season.”
Bellamy joins the Fleet as a player development consultant. She was a mainstay on the U.S. National Team, earning three Olympic medals (gold in 2018, silver in 2010 and 2014), as well as eight World Championship gold medals. The Westfield, Mass., native spent more than the last five years with Maples Crossing in Amesbury, Mass., serving as director of athletic development.
“The energy around the PWHL is inspiring, and being able to contribute to its growth here in Boston makes this role meaningful,” Bellamy said per the team. “What makes it even more special is the ability to keep moving forward with my incredible team at Maples Crossing, whose support has allowed me to take this opportunity. I’m looking forward to being a part of another great team and helping the Fleet chase a championship.”
Whitmore spent two years running Whitmore Hockey Development in Maine. He has also served as an assistant coach in the USHL for the Chicago Steel, as well as an assistant with Bowdoin College’s women’s team. He also played professionally in the NHL, AHL, Germany and Austria. Whitmore will be a player development coach for the Fleet.
“We’re excited to add Derek to our coaching staff,” Sparre said in the statement. “He’s a dynamic coach and has a deep understanding of player development. His expertise will be of great benefit to our athletes and overall program.”
